Photography » From Costa Rica > Panama > Trinidad > Surinam and Back

After a tough and turbulent period in Costa Rica, starting 31-05-2009, in my position of CEO of Vereenigde Costaricaanse Compagnie for Hacienda la Esperanza I made 13-06-2009 an 18 hours` trip from Costa Rica > Panama > Trinidad > Surinam.

I had seven days for the necessary following steps in Paramaribo and on our country estate Landgoed Groot Mariënbosch.  Early this morning, at 02:50 a.m., I left Torarica Hotel to go to   Surinam Airport in Zanderij. The trip back to Costa Rica via Trinidad > Panama > Costa Rica. My second stay in Trinidad.

During this short stay in Trinidad  I went with driver and tour guide Stephen Letren to Port of Spain at some 20 kilometres distance from the international airport.

Stephen told me that Port of Spain has around 60.000 inhabitants and is the capital of the Republic of the Islands Trinidad (1.250.000 inhabitants) & Tobago (55.000 inhabitants).

Many lessons learnt... About this Caribbean melting pot, the history of the steel pan music, the Spanish `conquistadores` in the very past, the time that Trinidad was a tiny but vital part of the British Empire. In particular I enjoyed the old `victorian styled mansions`, built by former plantation owners. Coffee, coconut and suggar cane planters. Like we Dutch did in Surinam since the 16th century...  so thinking about Landgoed Groot Mariënbosch again.
